Transaction Insights
For transaction insights, I look for both transaction data and real insights into the space. Any banker can pull data on public companies in the space. You want to see fruits from their labor and actual interactions with the industry. I recommend the following newsletters/distribution lists:
Whipstitch Capital newsletter for M&A updates and deal multiples
Cascadia Capital industry reports
Harris Williams quarterly updates
If you have an ACG membership, you may be able to gain limited access to Pitchbook, a data provider in the M&A world.
Fundraising and Industry Reading
The best industry periodicals are either general and event based (tough to beat NOSH and BevNET and the Dive publications) or they are specialized on a sub-category or niche, and can be incredibly useful. I am a fan of email newsletters and just scanning them daily. Here is a list of industry periodicals to look into:
General Food & Beverage
Project NOSH & BevNET
Food Dive & Grocery Dive
Meat Processing
Meating Place
Store Perimeter
Frozen & Refrigerated
Private Label
My Private Brand
PLMA
E-Commerce
eMarketer
Marketplace Pulse
The Sale Process
The team at adventur.es has written a pretty insightful, simple read on the M&A process called The Messy Marketplace. This book does not really apply to high growth consumer brands, but if you are a manufacturing business with less than $5 million of EBITDA, this could be a great resource.
Check out The Middle Ground, from adventur.es for a detailed primer on legal documentation.
